ABSTRACT

The medieval Assam made tremendous progress in educational sphere. The Educational and literary development didn’t begin all on a sudden as it is not a process of sudden growth, it has roots in the past. The education system of Assam in the medieval period was, by and large a legacy of a ancient period. The Aryan System of education called as Brahmanical system spread in Assam during the ancient period and the tradition of Sanskrit culture & learning continued in medieval period specially in the state of Ahom and Koch Kings. Again the new Vaishnavite movement brought about a tremendous intellectual awakening in the state. The new religious institution Satra and Namghar become the most important agency for popular education in Assam.

Thus all these formal and informal types of system together built the massive superstructure of medieval education in Assam.
