Edward Gardner the First British Resident in the Court of Nepal (with Special Reference to the Anglo- Nepalese Relationship) (1816 A. D. - 1826 A. D)

ABSTRACT

The British possessed Kumaun from Gorkhas in 1815 A.D as an outcome of Segaully treaty. After the occupation of Kumaun from Gorkhas in 1815 A.D, the office of the British Commission (Kumaun) was first laid down in Almora. At first the British Commissioner office (Kumaun) was held by Honourable Edward Gardner on May 8, 1815 A.D In 1816 A.D when the treaty of Segaully was rectified by Nepalese government, Edward Gardner was sent to Nepal as the first permanent British Resident. Edward Gardner remain held the post of Resident at the Court of Nepal from 1816 till the year of his retirement 1826, for about thirteen years. During his service period the Anglo- Nepalese relationship was at its height of peace and harmony.
