Effect of Banana Flower Powder (Musa sp.) Supplement on Milk Yield in Lactating Cattle

Author Name : Swapnil Nilesh Shah, Sagar Devidas Dhangar

ABSTRACT : District Jalgaon contributes about half of Maharashtra’s banana production and more than 25% of that of India. Non-pharmacological research on banana blossom consumption revealed high nutritional qualities of the by-products of banana and the low cost of its production promotes their use as a prospective non-conventional food resource with high nutraceutical value. The present study aimed to study effect of flowers of Musa paradisiaca supplement on milk yield in lactating cattle. Significant higher concentration of phytochemical and nutrients was recorded in aqueous extract of banana flower powder (BFP). The impact of BFP was reflected in increase in average milk yield (AMY) in goat (N=76), cow (N=142) and buffalo (N=580). In lactating goat the AMY increased from 2.19±0.21 to 2.53±0.32 kg/day, in lactating cow the AMY increased from 3.47 ±0.32 to 3.67 ±0.43 kg/day and in lactating buffalo the AMY increased from 6.2 ±0.38 to 6.67 ±0.42 kg/day indicating BFP contained tannins, saponins, flavonoids, anthraquinones and steroids may performed the oestrogenic effect and boosted the milk production.
