Effect of Confinement of Concrete on Behaviour of Concrete Encased Steel Beam

Author Name : Mr. Mayur M Wakade, Dr. M. R. Shiyekar

ABSTRACT The encased beams are commonly used as structural members in multi-storey buildings, commercial and industrial buildings, warehouses and portal frame. Various building codes involving design approaches developed for concrete encased composite members are evaluated. This paper study about the analytical and experimental behaviour of Concrete beam encased with varying the spacing between the stirrups of beam as optimization of spacing by its maximum Load carrying capacity and deflection. The modelling and Finite Element Analysis was done using ANSYS Workbench 2020R1. Six full scale concrete encased steel beams were designed and casted to have different spacing between stirrups and tested for bending shear and bending moment strength. The Concrete beam having section size of 250mm x 150 mm x 600mm encased with Structural Steel ISMB150 of span 560mm is used for encased beam. The parametric study has shown the Deflection and Load carrying capacity of the beams with different spacing between stirrups (in the 80mm spaced stirrups beam) which has high load carrying capacity and the less deflection while compared to the other beams. Incremental loading is applied by using ANSYS workbench 2020R1 and results and graphs are plotted. The experimental results align with those from ANSYS FEM software, with a difference of within 10%. The FEM results indicate a higher load-carrying capacity than the experimental results.
