ABSTRACT Tribology is the branch of engineering where the relative motion of two interacting surfaces is studied. The mixing process between air and fuel plays an important role in combustion, this mixing is obviously dependent on the characteristics of the fuel spray. Diesel engines are one of the most common reciprocating engines used in power generation applications. Piston rings are used to provide sealing of combustion gas and to control the oil film on the liner wall. The lower ring is usually called the oil ring to limit the quantity of oil reaching the upper end of the liner to prevent excessive oil accumulation or deposits. The top ring is used to prevent compressed air or combustion gas from leaking past the rings so as to preserve the pressure in the cylinder. The comparison of the surface roughness (Ra) values is done to investigate the surface roughness of the IC Engine new components considered for the study. The duration of the test considered is 2 hours, 4 hours and 6 hours running of IC Engine. The blend of M50 (50% Diesel + 50% Hippe oil) has better lubrication properties exhibited as compared to diesel. The results reveal that Ra value is improved significantly for the fuel blended with Hippe oil.
