ABSTRACT
The study investigated the effect of Jigsaw learning strategy on the academic achievement of students in Anambra State secondary schools. Two research questions guided the study and null three hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. The design adopted for this study was quasi-experimental design. Specifically the design is a pretest-post test non-equivalent control group design. The population of the study consisted of 23,074 (10,600 males and 12,474 females) senior secondary one (SS I) students in the 261 government owned secondary schools in Anambra State as at 2019/2020 session. Multi-stage sampling procedure was used to drawfifty-nine (59) SSI students for the study. The instrument for data collection was titled ‘‘Mathematics Content Knowledge Assessment (MCKA)’’which was duly validated by two experts from Faculty of Education, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka and one subject specialist in the Exams office, Ministry of Education, Anambra State. The reliability of MCKA was determined using Kuder-Richardson formular 20 (k-R20) which yielded 0.70. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions and Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) to test the hypotheses. The findings of the study revealed among others that the post-test and gained mean Mathematics achievement scores of students taught using jigsaw cooperative learning strategies were greater than that of those taught using conventional learning method. It was also reported that there is no significant difference in the mean Mathematics achievement scores of male and female students that were taught using jigsaw cooperative learning strategies. Based on the findings, it was recommended among others that Government, educationists and stake holders in education should help Mathematics teachers learn the skills of jigsaw cooperative strategies through organizing in-service programmes such as seminars, workshops and conferences.
