Effect of Vitamin D in Acne
Author Name : Roopali Kashyap
ABSTRACT Vitamin D is a secosteroid that is synthesized endogenously when human skin is exposed to UV-B. At insufficient sun exposure, such as during winter at higher latitudes, the compound is a true vitamin that needs to be taken up by diet, such as fatty fish or fortified milk, or direct supplementation. Vitamin D activates via its metabolite 1α, 25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 the vitamin D receptor. This transcription factor has a direct effect on the genome and the expression of more than 1000 human genes. Accordingly, vitamin D has a number of biological effects ranging from bone formation, the inhibition of hyper-proliferative diseases to the modulation of the immune system. Together these findings suggest that older person with acne had low vitamin D levels and explained the relationship between vitamin D levels and the severity of acne.
