Effect of Zinc Addition on the Mechanical Properties of Bismuth Material

Author Name : D. J. Chokhawala, K.C. Poria

ABSTRACT

Microhardness measurement were carried out on 5N pure crystalline Bismuth and Zinc mixed Bismuth materials. Intrinsic microhardness value of pure Bismuth and Zinc obtained. Zinc metal is mixed with Bismuth by 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, 50%, 60%, 70% , 80% and 90% and Vickers microhardness number Hv, Moh hardness number Hand load independent hardness Hv0 forsuch mixed samples were obtained. Results were correlated with their anisotropy properties and defects produced in it. Bismuth and these low melting monotectic type alloys find applications in solders, fusible and thermal fuses as well as in sounding Rocket experiments.
