Emerging Issues of Expert System for Strengthening Digital Farming

ABSTRACT Farming is considered as linchpin of Indian economy being a primary occupation of the majority of rural community of India. In view of rapid technological advancement and its application in field, farmers require advance or experts technological opinion to take prompt decision during soil preparation, seed selection, fertilizer management, pesticide management, water scheduling, weed management etc, to achieve higher returns. Realizing the importance of digital farming, expert system has been considered as most powerful and appropriate extension approach that stimulates human knowledge from an expert in certain domain for facilitating farmers to make decision at a level of greater than human expert. It helps to farmers in opting economically viable and environmentally freshly decision related to crop management. This paper explores utility of expert system in agriculture sector and review of various expert systems in agriculture. Agricultural Expert system is a special computer program designed to develop the problem solving behavior of an agricultural expert in a narrow domain or discipline. In agriculture, such system integrate the accumulated expertise of various discipline such as entomology, horticulture, soil management into a framework that best address the specific problems and onsite needs of the Indian farmers. It accumulates experimental and conventional knowledge with the logical skills of specialists to help farmers in making the best decisions for raising a successful crop. The main purpose of expert system is to enhance the performance of average worker to the level of an expert. Appropriate application of expert system or AI (Artificial Intelligence) or machine intelligence across the farming sector could act to be an epitome of shift in how farming is practiced presently. AI systems can enhance farmers performance in terms of their social and economic well being, we need to be open to innovating new upcoming technologies with expert system or AI as their soul
