English Language Teaching for Specific Purpose: Objectives and Instructional Development of ESP Teachers

ABSTRACT The current article endeavours to comprehend, examine, and offer a comprehensive overview of fundamental elements pertaining to English for Specific Purposes (ESP): its definition, scope, historical context, distinguishing features, categorisations, and objectives. The text also addresses the teaching objectives of English for Specific Purposes (ESP), the responsibilities of an ESP instructor, the training required to become an ESP teacher, as well as the aims of an ESP course and program. A discernible justification can be observed within the diverse array of conflicting perspectives on ESP policy, leading to a consensus that ESP entails the instruction of English to learners with distinct objectives and aims, namely those of a professional, academic, or scientific nature. This article examines the primary roles and duties of instructors of foreign languages for distinct reasons. This paper delineates the overarching duties and obligations of higher education instructors engaged in diverse and multifaceted professional endeavours. Additionally, it examines the characteristics and distinctive attributes of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) courses.
