Environment Conservation Movement by Women of Uttarakhand

ABSTRACT Women have treasured relation with nature. This might be due to their special common feature of feminism that both have power to reproduce, support life and act as a nourishing mother. In hindu mythology, prithvi is known as goddesses Earth, the mother of all being. Famous ecofeminist Vandana Shiva also support the relation of females with nature, she argues that there is an intimate link between women and nature and she further explains the fact that, in the contemporary society women are identified as being close to nature (prakriti) and men as close to culture (sanskriti). Women no doubt are good manger, hence always played a vital role in forest management too. If we talk about rural women or hill women, they have special relation with nature. In Uttarakhand, women of villages played an outstanding role in the protection of nature. An incredible attempt had been made by village women of Uttrakhand in environment protection from being deforestation through their non-violent but courageous movement. They save Uttrakhand from displacement, dislocation and cultural destruction through their effective resistant movement.
