Environmental Degradation in The 21st Century: Threats and Mitigation Strategies

ABSTRACT The 21st century has witnessed an alarming rise in environmental degradation, driven by rapid industrialization, urbanization, deforestation, and unsustainable exploitation of natural resources.Climate change, biodiversity loss, air and water pollution, and soil erosion are all results of this process, and ocean acidification, posing significant threats to human health, ecosystems, and global stability. This paper explores the multifaceted causes of environmental degradation and the subsequent socio-economic and ecological impacts. Furthermore, it highlights various mitigation strategies, including sustainable development practices, renewable energy adoption, environmental policy reforms, and conservation efforts. The role of international cooperation and local community engagement is emphasized as essential forcombating environmental degradation. This study provides a comprehensive overview of the threats posed by environmental degradation and proposes actionable strategies for creating a more sustainable future.
