ABSTRACT

The paper gives out the genesis of problem in Assam, its present status and its future prospects from security point of view. Despite formation of tribal councils and autonomous districts for various tribes, the dissatisfaction has persisted and somehow the insurgent groups have exploited these feelings amongst tribal bodies to survive. Bodo Territorial Autonomous District (BTAD), KarbiAnglong and North Cachar Hills (DimaHasao) are all autonomous areas under Schedule VI of Indian Constitution based on tribal configuration. There are other autonomous councils in the state again based on tribes vizTiwa Autonomous Council at Marigaon, Rabha Autonomous Council at Goalpara, Deori Autonomous Council at Lakhimpur, Mishing Autonomous Council at Dhemaji, ThengarKachari Autonomous Council at Titabor and SonowalKachari Autonomous Council at Dibrugarh. The chapter seeks to ascertain the role of various tribes in current insurgency scenario and how fulfilling the aspirations of these indigenous tribes is likely to bring prosperity to the state.
