ABSTRACT Transdermal drug delivery plays a vital role in treating various skin diseases. These trends were introduced more than 30years ago. Penetration of drug through skin is a rate limiting step. So, there is a continuous need to develop various novel drug delivery systems for efficient drug release through transdermal route. Novel approaches used to enhance permeability of drug through the stratum corneum includes iontophoresis, sonophoresis, microneedles, etc., by physical means, the use of penetration enhancers (surfactants and organic solvents) is by chemical means and biochemical means of using were liposomes, niosomes, transferosomes and ethosomes have been reported. Ethosomes are novel lipid carriers composed of ethanol, phospholipids, and water. They are reported to improve the skin delivery of various drugs. The high concentration of ethanol makes the ethosomes unique, as ethanol is known for its disturbance of skin lipid bilayer organization. Therefore, when integrated into a vesicles membrane; it gives the vesicle the ability to penetrate the stratum corneum. The aim and objective of this review is to focus on ethosomal drug delivery and its applications (therapeutic and cosmetic) in current scenario.
