ABSTRACT
Aim: To evaluation of hair growth promoting activity of Stigmasterol in rats.
Objective: To evaluate the effect of Stigmasterol for hair growth promoting activity in rats. To compare the efficacy of Stigmasterol for hair growth promoting activity in rats with the standard drug.
Materials and Methods: The present study was conducted using male albino Wistar rats divided into 8 groups (containing 6 rats in each group). Normal (Group-I) animals received only vehicle (normal saline solution once daily, p.o). The control (Group-II) and six treatment groups (Group-III, Group-IV, Group-V, Group-VI, Group-VII, Group-VIII) rats were injected with testosterone for 21 days to induce rat model of alopecia. On 22nd day for confirmation of induction of alopecia following parameters were taken into consideration viz. body weight, testosterone level, cholesterol level and histopathological of skin. After induction of alopecia Treatment of different groups with minoxidil (3%) and (stigmasterol 10 mg/kg) alone and in combination with std. was started on Day 22 and lasted for four weeks up to Day 49. After treatment parameter like measurement of hair length, Skin irritation test, histopathological were evaluated.
Result: Minoxidil (3%) and stigmasterol alone and in combination showed significant decrease in testosterone and cholesterol level, as compared to the control group. In brief stigmasterol showed potent effect on various hair growth promoting related complications, which might be emerge as herbal and safer alternative for the treatment of hair loss. Also the Histopathological studies reveals that stigmasterol have excellent hair growth promoting activity by an enlargement of follicular size and a prolongation of the Anagen phase.
