ABSTRACT
Concrete structures are subjected to aggressive influence of environment during their lifespan. Overloading, action of fire, natural disasters etc. can damage Concrete structures. The purpose of this research is to find the suitability of replacement of cement by Silica Fume, GGBS and Metakaolin. Metakaolin (MK), silica fume (SF) and Ground Granulated Blast furnace Slag (GGBS) in M25 gradedconcrete by replacing 15% to 50% of cement from it. Experimental study includes preliminary test to find the properties of materials like compressive strength. Generally used in concrete to find out the strength of concrete. A concrete test was made to study the workability properties of this concrete and conventional concrete. Hardened concrete test on cubes were made to study the strength of concrete. The test comprises of compressive strength test.
Metakaolin (MK) was used in a 5% & 10% in partial replacement of cement in concrete basically which was basically a pozzolanic material and was treated as economical and increased strength as well as durable properties due to its pozzolanic nature. Utmost result is received by using metakaolin in concrete, as a part replacement material to cement in past reviews.
Silica fume (SF) has been used in an experiment as a partial replacement for cement in concrete to measure the durability of the mixes. The SF mixes were generally produced with 5% & 10% SF substitution of cement and water/cement (w/c) ratio of 0.35. Four different curing conditions were used to simulate various site conditions and tests were carried out at 28 days after casting. Mechanical properties and durability properties of the concrete can improved by inclusion of silica fume.
Ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) is effectively used in concrete as a partial cement replacement which are headed towards cement saving, energy saving and cost saving as well as environmental and socio-economic benefits. GGBS has used on 10%, 15% and 30% to generate durable concrete structures when it mixed with ordinary Portland cement. The inclusion of MK, SF and GGBS have positive effect mainly on the strength of concrete. The results of the study indicate that after replacing cement by MK,SF and GGBS, the concrete has good compressive strength than usual Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC). The present work has large future research scope in future. Durability test, Tensile strength test for beam can be ensured in future.
