Exploring The Effects of Dark Humour on Psychological Well Being and Coping Mechanisms Among Adults

Author Name : Aditi Gupta, Dr. Nirmala Singh Rathore

ABSTRACT Dark humor, characterized by its use of morbid, taboo, or controversial subjects in a humorous or satirical manner, has long intrigued psychologists and researchers for its potential impact on psychological well-being and coping mechanisms among adults. This paper seeks to explore the effects of dark humor on individuals' mental health and coping strategies. Through a review of existing literature and empirical studies, this research aims to investigate how exposure to dark humor influences various aspects of psychological well-being, including stress reduction, anxiety management, and resilience-building. Additionally, this study will examine the underlying psychological mechanisms through which dark humor operates, such as cognitive reappraisal, social support, and emotional regulation. Furthermore, this research will explore the role of individual differences, such as personality traits, sense of humor, and cultural background, in moderating the effects of dark humor on psychological well-being. By considering these factors, this study seeks to provide a nuanced understanding of how dark humor impacts individuals' mental health and coping strategies in diverse contexts. The findings of this research have implications for clinical psychology, counseling, and mental health interventions, as they shed light on the potential benefits and risks associated with the use of dark humor as a coping mechanism. Ultimately, this study aims to contribute to the growing body of literature on humor and mental health, offering insights into the complex interplay between humor, psychological well-being, and coping mechanisms among adults.
