ABSTRACT
The present study was designed with the main aim to standardize the extraction process and phytochemical screening of medicinally important plant Cipadessa baccifera. The plant samples for investigation were collected from Thavarekere and Savandurga, Magadi Taluk, Bengaluru Rural district, and outskirts of Bengaluru, and identification was authenticated by National Ayurveda and Dietetics Research Institute, Bangalore; vide voucher specimen number, RRCBI-8971. The dried plant parts were pulverized in an electric blender and the powdered material was stored in air tight containers for further analyses. Dry and coarsely powered plant parts of C. baccifera were subjected to sequential extraction using Soxhlet apparatus. Each of the plant part was extracted exhaustively in organic solvents such as, hexane, chloroform, methanol and water. The extracts of leaf, bark, fruit and root of C. baccifera were screened to identify the presence of various phytochemicals using standard qualitative chemical tests. Results revealed that The yield of sequential methanolic extracts of all the plant parts was higher when compared to the less polar hexane and chloroform extracts. Methanol and water extracts of the leaf, bark, fruit and root were found to have majority of the phytoconstituents which included bioactive molecules such as alkaloids, phenols, flavonoids, tannins and saponins. In conclusion, findings of phytochemical screening of sequential extracts of C. baccifera delineated that methanol and aqueous extracts of the leaf, bark, fruit and root had majority of phytoconstituents. The significant bioactive compounds present were, saponins in all plant parts, alkaloids, phenols, triterpenes, flavonoids and glycosides in leaves, tannins and phenols in bark, flavonoids, fats and oils in the roots. The pharmacological properties of C. baccifera are due to the presence of these phytochemicals.
