ABSTRACT The main aim of the project is to implement a pneumatic operated actuator for industries and these actuators utilize compressed air to generate the operating energy which converts energy formed by vacuum or compressed air at high pressure into either linear or rotary motion. Air pressure is the primary source for pneumatic valve actuators and it acts on a piston or bellows diaphragm creating linear force on a valve stem and this actuator controls the valves of flowing fluid and enables large forces to be produced from relatively small pressure changes. These forces are used with 5/2 joystick valves to move diaphragm to affect the flow of liquid. In our project we are using butterfly valves instead of ball valves because they are capable of producing accurate, stable and modulating flow control which will increase the efficiency. Valves require little pressure to operate the actuator and larger the size of the piston, the larger the output pressure can be obtained and this pressure is transferred to the valve stem, which is connected to either the valve plug or butterfly valve. A pneumatic actuator can be arranged to be spring-closed or spring-opened with air pressure to provide movement to the spring. We have fabricated an improved actuator for the opening and closing of butterfly valve and we have compared the butterfly valve and ball valve for the actuation of opening and closing. key words: Actuator, Reciprocating.
