GAMIFICATION: A New Approach in Pedagogy

ABSTRACT Now a days, the term ‘Gamification’ is very trendy and extensive in the field of Education. Gamification has been emerged in the field of education as a result of continuous research conducted in teaching- learning process. Gamification was first coined by Nick Pelling (a game designer) on 2002, but this concept is popular since 2nd half of 2010. In general, Gamification means the use of gaming elements, principles and approaches in a teaching learning context to make teaching learning process more interesting. It provides motivation, instant feedback and space for engagement & team-work in a teaching learning situation. It also helps students to develop challenging skills and knowledge. Moreover, it makes the whole learning process joyful and creative. The main purpose of this study is to elaborately explain the various aspects of gamification in education. We differentiate gamification from game - based learning and traditional learning method also. We discussed the elements, examples, process, advantages and disadvantages of gamification in education in a detail manner. This study will be helpful for applying gamification method in teaching learning situation also for further research.
