Gastroretentive Drug Delivery System -Recent Trends

ABSTRACT

Oral route has been most popular and successfully used route for delivery of drugs because of its convenience and ease of administration, greater flexibility in dosage form design and ease of production and low cost. The biggest problem in oral drug delivery is low and erratic drug bioavailability. To overcome the problems associated with conventional oral drug delivery system, scientists has recently centered on controlled drug delivery systems that has many advantages over conventional system. One among such delivery system is gastro-retentive drug delivery system. It is widely employed approach to retain the dosage form in upper gastrointestinal tract for prolonged period of time that can overcome many limitations associated with conventional oral delivery including poor bioavailability. This article provides information about manufacturing, advantages, approaches and evaluation of gastro-retentive tablets.
