Gc-Ms Analysis of the Stem Bark of Pentaclethra Macrophylla
Author Name : Okiemute Rosa Johnson – Ajinwo, Dummene Godwin Nyodee
ABSTRACT
Pentaclethramacrophylla, is a well-known medicinal plant in parts of East, West and Central Africa. The fruit is eaten regularly as a staple food in Eastern Nigeria and is considered a delicacy due to the meaty taste. In African traditional medicine, the leaves, seeds, stem bark, and fruit pulp have been employed in the treatment of convulsion, gonorrhea, as anthelmintics and analgesic. The antiinflammatory, anti-helminthic and abortifacient activities of the plant has been established from studies. However, reports on the bioactive compounds in the plant are lacking. Hence this study is aimed at identification of the bioactive compounds in the stem bark of P. macrophylla. The GC-MS analysis revealed the presence of thirteen bioactive compounds: Benzene, 1,3-bis(1,1-dimethylethyl)-, 1,1,1-trimethylamine, Glycerol, Butanedioic acid, Threitol, L-Threitol, 1-(Trimethylsilyl)-5-oxo-L-proline trimethylsilyl ester, Butanoic acid, 4-ester, Benzene, 1,2,3-trimethyl, Lyxose, tetra ether, Xyitol,1,3-Dihydro Benzimidazol-2-one, N, N’-bis(tert-butyldimethylsilyl)- and Benzoic acid, 3,4,5-trimethoxy-, methyl ester. Most of these compounds possess significant bioactivities, which may be responsible for the observed activities of P. macrophylla.
