Generative AI's Surge and Its Impact on Energy Consumption in High-Performance Computing Data Centers- Trends and Future Outlook
Author Name : Gnana Teja Reddy Nelavoy Rajendra
ABSTRACT Due to the high growth rate of Generative AI (Gen AI), several sectors are affected, involving a change in the generation and use of digital content, such as the health sector, the financial sector, and the entertainment sector. This paper considers how this shift with Gen AI has significantly affected energy usage and discusses this using the context of HPC data centers for AI training and deployment. As seen with GPT-3 and AlphaFold models, the dependence on AI models is growing, and with it, energy consumption calls for elaborative strategies regarding the consumption of resources. This research analyzes relevant features affecting the generation of artificial intelligence, hardware and cooling needs, energy efficiency trends, and sustainable development in artificial intelligence. Priority is accorded to aspects like new hardware structures, integration of renewable energy, and artificial intelligence for energy demand to reduce the adverse effects on the environment amid computation requirements. Therefore, the implication of future workloads to artificial I, intelligence projects is that improvements in these will influence energy consumption and call upon stakeholders to embrace responsible practices
