Haridra and Hepatic Health: A Boon for Ayurveda

ABSTRACT
Haridra is a potent medicinal herb used traditionally since ancient times for the treatment of various skin disorders, liver disorders and respiratory disorders and are well documented in Ayurvedic literatures. It is also used in daily cooking all over India. Man has been using plants and herbs for treating various disease since immemorial times. In India, the earliest mention of medicinal plants is to be found in Rig Veda which is of 4500- 1600 B.C. India is rich in flora of various kinds having several medicinal properties which are already known to us while some are yet to be discovered and used for the betterment of the human mankind. The practice of using indigenous plants for the treatment of various health ailments has been an age old practice. With the advancement in technology and lifestyle modification people are suffering from liver diseases more and more and it is a worldwide problem now. Modern system of medicine though may be advanced in terms of diagnosis and procedure but most of the drugs used for the purpose of treatment has various side effects.So, people today are more inclined towards Ayurveda as it not only treats the disease but also helps in keeping an individual healthy and happy. Haridra is one of those herbs whose demand is raising day by day by pharmaceutical industry due to its multiple pharmacological activities. It is enriched with many useful phytoconstituents which are responsible for its efficacy. It not only has Hepatoprotective activity, but it is also useful in Kustha, Swasa-Kasa-Hikka,Jwara, Arsha,Krimi, Pandu, Kamala and many other conditions.
