ABSTRACT
Hemodialysis (HD) patients may experience stress-strain during dialysis. Cardiac arrhythmias, intradialytic hypotension or hypertension, dialysis disequilibrium syndrome, reactions to the HD membrane, air embolism, bleeding, and seizures are examples of complications. Long-term hemodialysis (HD) is the primary treatment modality for end-stage renal disease (ESRD). It is linked to a number of complications, including infection, amyloidosis, anemia, and malnutrition, as well as musculoskeletal and cardiovascular system (CVS) morbidities. CVS complications and HD-related infections are the leading causes of death in ESRD patients with HD. Other complications can occur during or after HD, such as stroke and disequilibrium syndrome. Missed dialysis sessions can result in death from sudden cardiac arrhythmias, cardiac arrest from electrolyte disturbances, and/or severe overload. This review discusses common HD challenges as well as new progress that are likely to influence its outcome.
Key Words: Hemodialysis, ESRD, dialysis, syndrome, infections, complications.
