Herbal Cough Syrup: A Review

ABSTRACT The purpose of this review study was to list the plants that are used in traditional culture and ethno botany to treat and alleviate cough, given the prevalence of cough in both adults and children. Compounds with substantial antitussive properties and minimal adverse effects may be found in medicinal plants. More than 700 chemical and herbal formulations in the form of pills, capsules, tinctures, and decoctions from more than 100 plants are used therapeutically. This makes using herbal syrups more practical and effective. This article offers a succinct summary of recent advancements in the manufacture and evaluation of herbal syrups for a variety of pharmacological uses. Treatment of cough in various respiratory disorders with conventional opioid antitussive medications, such as codeine and its analogs, might lead to complications. A powerful exhalation that clears the tracheobronchial tract of fluids and foreign particles is known as an explosive cough. There is discussion on the safety profile of herbal cough syrups. While most people believe most herbs to be harmless, there are several populations who may be at danger, including children, pregnant women, people with certain medical problems, and those who have allergies. Herbal cough syrup side effects, such as gastrointestinal distress or allergic reactions, are usually mild and temporary.
