Identity and Cross-cultural Encounter in Anita Desai, Bye Bye Blackbird

ABSTRACT Bye-Bye Blackbird, the first novel to deal with such problems arising from cultural difference, tells the story of Indian immigrants to England. The paper focuses a strong impact on sensibilities of the main characters Dev, Adit and Sarah. Sarah lives a life of a cultural exile. The novel deals with east and west culture in which we find the matching and mismatching of the cultures. The cultural encounter in the novels portrays the crisis of cultural identity. The novel explores the lives of the outsiders seeking to forge a new identity in an alien society.
