ABSTRACT
Research evidence affirms that years ago, there has been one basic theoretical framework for teaching which is known as pedagogy – the art and science of teaching children which solely involves teacher – directed learning. Andragogy on the other hand, is the art and science of helping adults learn. It assumes that adults and children do not learn in exactly the same ways and it built around the concept of self-directed learning. This paper focuses on the need to blend the two approaches towards enhancing utility-oriented outcomes in mathematics. Therefore, this study investigated the impact of the combination of Andragogy and pedagogy on the students’ learning outcomes in secondary school mathematics. The sample size for the study was 120 SS II students. Two instruments were used viz: Mathematics Achievement Test (MAT) and Mathematics Attitude Questionnaire (MAQ). The study adopted pretest-postest quasi experimental design using 22 factorial design. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results of the findings indicated a significant difference in the performance of Andragogy and Pedagogy group and conventional group. It is obvious that the treatment is more sensitive towards students’ attitude to Mathematics in the experimental group, Based on the findings of this study, it is hereby recommended that the combination of andragogy and pedagogy would go a long way at enhancing an optimal students’ learning outcomes in secondary school mathematics.
