Impact of Bridge Course in Developing English Language Skills of Class VI Students of Odisha Adarsha Vidyalayas

ABSTRACT

Odisha Adarsha Vidyalayas were set up by Department of School and Mass Education, Goverment of Odisha at Block headquarters in all 314 Blocks of Odisha  at Secondary and Senior Secondary level from class VI to XII with an objective to provide free and quality education in English to students in semi- urban and rural areas .The Adarsha Vidyalaya aims to provide the rural talents by inculcating 21st century learning skills through a holistic and integral approach. All the Odiha Adarsh Vdyalayas(OAVs) are English medium schools affiliated to CBSE (English medium course).Some of the key features are

  • The Admission is done through Entrance Test and students can join in class VI.
  • Bridge course materials are developed to help in east  transition from Odia medium to English medium(Source:https.//oav.edu.in/).

The sudden shift of instruction from odia to that of English causes the gap. So Odisha Adarsha Vidyalaya Sangnanthan developed bridge course materials in English(Sanjog) prepared by English Language Teaching Institute(ELTI), Odisha and provided to each student of class VI at the time of admission in order to help students to make a successful transition into their new academic programmes by providing them with necessary  background knowledge. The purpose of this study is to find out the impact of Bridge Course in Odisha Adarsha Vidyalayas for developing English language skills in  class VI. The study presents performance level of students of class VI in English. One OAV from Ganjam disgtrict of Odisha is selected as population for the study purposively.79 students and four teachers constitute the sample. Descriptive Survey Method was employed. The tools are used for the study are Performance test in English language ,Questionnaire schedule for teachers and FGD format for students
