Impact of Technology in Improving Listening Skill of English of High School Students

ABSTRACT

It is a firm believe these days that technology plays the most important role in the daily classroom work and school environment. The technological interventions and technology- based material plays a central role in making teaching–learning environment more interesting, encouraging and motivating. Listening plays an important role in making communication clearer, conducive and the process of education bipolar. The objective of this study is to examine the impact of technology and technology based material on the listening ability of the students in learning English and to draw out the perceptions of the teachers about the use of technology based material in the enhancement and development of listening skill in English language learners. Self designed module and use of YouTube for lesson delivering was used by the researcher. Mixed- method research design was opted for the present study. A sample of 20 teachers and 30 students was taken for this study. Questionnaire was used as the tool for data collection from the teachers to get perception of the teachers regarding the use of technology for enhancing listening skill in English language. An objective type test was used for the collection of quantitative data from the students to see the enhancement in their listening skill prior to the experiment and after experiment. The scores of the students were analysed using t- test and percentage was used to analyze the data obtained from the teacher. The results proved that the use of technology make the content of the textbook more interesting and effective than traditional teaching material and method using the textbook only. This study also revealed that the majority of the teachers also preferred technological interventions and agreed that technology based material enhances the listening skill of the students in the classroom while teaching English.
