ABSTRACT

Background/Aim: Neriumoleanderis an evergreen medicinal herb belongs to Apocynaceae family. Its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, and hepatoprotective properties have all been investigated extensively.Nerium oleander in relation to neuropharmacological effect is limited. The purpose of this research was to test the relaxing and sedative effects of a methanol extracts of Nerium oleander leaves in albino mice in vivo.

Methods: Nerium oleander plants leaves were extracted with methanol following the availability of phytochemical constituents was examined during the soxhlet extraction procedure. Rota-rod also sodium thiopental produced sleeping time assessment experiments in animals at dosages of 100 and 200 mg/kg were used to assess the sedative - hypnotic properties. All trials employed diazepam at a dosage of 1 mg/kg as the reference medication.

Results: In this study, we discovered that a methanolic extract of Nerium oleander (MENO) lowered the performance of the rota-rod experiment in a dose-response relationship. The methanolic extract of Nerium oleander (MENO) substantially reduced the retention times to sleep and increased the period of sleep produced by sodium thiopental in thiopental sodium induced napping time assessment experiments.

Conclusion: To summarise, our findings indicate that MENO leaves have significant sedative - hypnotic properties, supporting its therapeutic usage for sleep disturbances such as sleeplessness.
