Industrial Waste Water Treatment Using Adsorption by Activated Carbon

Author Name : Sushil More, Suhas Ghugare, Himanshu Lanke, Kiran Gandhi

ABSTRACT Environmental pollution particularly from organic chemicals and heavy metals in the wastewater is the most serious problem in the world. Due to extensive anthropogenic activities such as industrial operations particularly mining, agricultural processes and disposal of industrial waste materials; their concentration has increased to dangerous levels. The current problems in water and wastewater treatment are of the increasing pollution of waters by organic compounds that are difficult to decompose biologically. The organic substances resist the self-purification capabilities of the rivers as well as decomposition in conventional wastewater treatment plants. Adsorption is a promising method to reduce the pollutant concentrations of organic compounds as well as heavy metals in waste water. The cost effective activated carbon is utilized to remove various organic pollutants such as salicylic acid and dyes by adsorption.
