Influence of Personality Traits on Grit among Emerging Adults

ABSTRACT Grit is passion and sustained persistence applied toward long-term achievement, with no particular concern for rewards or recognition along the way. It is a combination of ambition, resilience, and self-control in pursuing long-term goals. An individuals’ grit would affect theirinclination to work towards achieving goals, be it in a work setting, or a personal setting. Thesebehaviors are widely predicted by personality traits in psychological research. The aim of this research was to study personality traits as predictors of grit among emerging adults. Data were collected from 70 female and 55 male Indian emerging adults (N=125) using the NEO Five- Factor Inventory-3, and the Grit-S Scale. Five simple linear regression analyses were done to test each of the Big-Five personality traits (openness to experience, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, neuroticism) as a predictor of grit among male and female emerging adults. Conscientiousness was found to be a strong significant positive predictor of grit. Neuroticism was the only significant negative predictor of grit. The relationship was moderately weak in this study. Extraversion and agreeableness were found to be weak significant positive predictors of grit, while openness to experience was not a significant predictor of grit. Gender differences in grit were studied using an independent samples t-test. There were no significant differences in level of grit among male and female emerging adults.
