ABSTRACT

GC-MS is most effective and versatile analytical techniques with numerous scientific applications to cater the sector of applied Sciences and Technology. This review elaborates the many uses of this technique. It’s really useful for quality control, analytical research, impurity profiling and maintenance for human welfare and development. It’s fast and sensitive, provides a high peak capacity, and allows determination of thermally stable and volatile compounds. GC is employed to separate the volatile and thermally stable substitutes during a sample whereas GC-MS fragments the analyte to be identified on the basis of its mass. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) may be the method that combines the features of gas-liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry to identify different substances within a test sample.GC-MS is that method of choice for toxicological analysis of toxicants volatile in GC while non-volatile and/or thermally labile toxicants need LC-MS for his or her determination. The utilization of a mass spectrometer because the detector in gas chromatography was developed during the 1950s by Roland Gohlke and Fred McLafferty and Modern gas chromatography (GC) was innovated by Martin and James in 1952 , and has become one of the most important and widely applied analytical techniques in modern chemistry. These sensitive devices were bulky, Fragile, and originally limited to laboratory settings. In 1968, the Finnigan Instrument Corporation delivered the primary quadrupole GC-MS. In 1996 the top-of-the-line high-speed GC-MS units completed analysis of fireside accelerants in less than 90 seconds, whereas first-generation GC/MS would have required at least 16 minutes. This has led to their widespread adoption during a number of fields.
