Integrating Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) in Kubectl using Keycloak

Author Name : Dr. Challa Narasimham, Glenn Gomes

ABSTRACT The integration of Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) with kubectl enhances the security of Kubernetes clusters by adding an extra layer of authentication. This paper discusses the process of configuring kubectl to use Keycloak, an identity management tool, as the authentication provider, enforcing MFA to safeguard access to the Kubernetes API server. By leveraging OpenID Connect (OIDC) and Keycloak, users must provide multiple authentication factors, improving cluster protection. This paper outlines the installation and configuration steps on macOS, including the necessary setup for Docker, Minikube, and kubectl, along with configuring Keycloak for MFA
