Author Name : Ms. Sreelekshmi. L, Mr. Mukhthar NS, Manjima B

ABSTRACT

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic multisystem disease related to abnormal insulin production, impaired insulin utilization or both. Insulin therapy plays a vital role in treating patients with diabetes mellitus.

Objectives: To assess the knowledge regarding self administration of insulin injection among patients with diabetes mellitus and to find out association between knowledge regarding diabetes mellitus with selected demographic variables.

Methods: The investigator adopted a quantitative approach with non-experimental descriptive  research design. A sample of 60 patients with diabetes mellitus from a selected  hospital, Kerala were selected using non-probability convenient sampling technique. Structured questionnaire was used to assess the knowledge regarding self administration of insulin injection.

Results: Results of the study revealed that majority (65%) of the subjects have average knowledge regarding self administration of insulin injection and only 18.3% of the subjects had good knowledge. 16.6% of the subjects had poor knowledge. The mean knowledge score is 10.6 with standard deviation of 3.84. There was significant association between the knowledge score and  age, occupation and number of years on insulin therapy.

Conclusion: As the number of patients with diabetes is increasing more focus should be given to educate the patient on management of diabetes. Present  study shows a lack of knowledge in using insulin therapy among diabetec patients. So more focus is given to impart knowledge on insulin administration.
