Lantana Camera Medical Uses and Toxicity

ABSTRACT Lantana camara know as toxic weed and medicinal plant. It was the first weed for biological control at the turn of century and was the serious weed. In many countries, it is responsible for infesting pastures, grazing lands, orchards and crops like, tea, coffee, oil palm, coconut and cotton, decrease the economics of the crops. Lantana camara plant can sustain in extreme climatic conditions of tropical and sub-tropical areas and it become worldwide as an ornamental plant. The stem, root and leaves contain many bioactive compounds for various therapeutic applications like cancers, chicken pox, measles, high blood pressure, asthma, antiseptic, catarrhal infections ,antispasmodic, carminative and diaphoretic. Lantana camera root extract is the most toxic part and may have potential as anticancer agent. Different parts is used for the treatment of various human ailments such as itches, cuts, ulcers, swellings, bilious fever, catarrh, eczema, tetanus, malaria, tumors and rheumatism. Toxic doses of lanta denes effect and cause bile canalicular damage, intrahepatic cholestasis, jaundice in cattle, sheep and goat. It has toxic effect ingestion of the livestock. Lantana camara poisonous in ruminants which results the ingestion of toxic varieties of the plant. It contain the triterpene acids lantadene A and lantadene B. It results in intrahepatic cholestasis and the liver injury include jaundice, photosensitisation and ruminal stasis. It decreased ruminal motility causes toxic material to be retained in the rumen and continuous absorption of toxins from the rumen maintains the disease. Some of the countries started to useas household furniture like tables, chairs etc. are species having economic importance and it hasdiversified applications.
