Life Cycle Analysis of Road Construction and Use for National Highway

Author Name : Ms. Deepti Satranj, Mr. Piyush Das

ABSTRACT

Road development and usage have a variety of environmental consequences; thus, it is critical to determine the origins of these burdens in order to implement appropriate mitigation policies. Life cycle analysis (LCA) is a valuable tool for decision-makers to obtain demonstrable, reliable, and non-misleading information. A “cradle to gate with options” LCA of a provincial road over a 60-year service life is presented in the report. The input data came from the project's bill of quantity, and their effects were assessed using the European standard EN 15804.

The effect of the building and maintenance phases, lighting, and vehicle use on the constructed road are all taken into account in this report. According to the findings of a SimaPro model, nearly half of the impacts occurred during the construction stage rather than during use. As a result, environmentally sustainable road design, low-impact material processing, and the use of secondary raw materials could have the greatest potential for minimizing environmental impacts.
