Limnological Studies of Soorakulam Pond, Sivagangai District, Tamilnadu, India With Reference To Its Productivity

ABSTRACT

Limnological studies of representative Soorakulam pond of Sivagangai district in Tamilnadu, India was carried out during March 2021 – August 2021. The pond is located at the Soorakulam village, Soorakulam Pudukkottai Panchayat, Sivagangai. Physico-chemical parameters of the water samples such as water temperature (35-38°c), Turbidity(5-10), TDS(70-120mg/L),Electrical conductivity(100-147μmhos/cm),pH(6.0-6.6),Total alkalinity (28-45mg/L),Total hardness(15-44mg/L),Calcium(6-26mg/L),Magnesium (04-17mg/L), Iron (0.7-1.0 mg/L), Free Ammonia (0.7-1.0mg/L), Nitrite(0.3-0.7mg/L)Nitrate(2-7mg/L), Chloride(10-15mg/L),Fluoride(0.2-0.6mg/L) and Sulphate(3-9mg/L) were recorded. Totally 21 species of phytoplankton belonging to different taxonomic groups were identified. Among these 7 species of cyanophyceae, 6 species of chlorophyceae, 5 species of Bacillariophyceae and 3 species of Euglenophyceae. The primary productivity (1867.08-3451.90) .The fluctuations of primary productivity for the six month analysis were observed in present investigation.
