ABSTRACT

Manuscript refers to a handwritten document, that is the author’s original work which has not yet been published. In ancient times, manuscripts were the primary means of preserving and transmitting knowledge.  Manuscriptology is study of manuscripts that is science of manuscripts in which critical editing of the work is given highest importance, ie reconstructions of the text, nearest to the author’s view on the basis of internal & external evidences Now a days manuscripts serve as missing link between ancient & present era, it bridges the gap between the treasure of ancient knowledge & modern research mind. Over all Manuscripts are essential tool for understanding the past and present, providing insights into the evaluation of language, literature and scientific knowledge as well as the experiences of diverse communities.  The government of India has taken the steps towards procuring, preserving the ancient knowledge with TKDL. And many manuscript resource centers are established, like Oriental Research Institute, Mysore, Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute, Pune and many more in other countries like, UK, Vatican city, USA etc.  For preservation & conservation of manuscripts many new methods like, Lamination, Digital documentation etc measures been adopted.
