ABSTRACT
Personal Values remain an important part of an individual’s life across the globe, in every country, state, and culture. Our values are what determine our actions and therefore play a huge part in the development of the individual. Media of all types has been seen as being influential on determining personal values. The present study examined the relationship between internet/social media consumption and its effect on the personal values of an individual. The personal values of the participants were measured using a self-reporting measure- Personal Value Questionnaire, which was administered on 120 full time students living in urban areas between the ages of 16-25. One-way ANOVA analysis was done to explore how internet/social media exposure is related to personal values and the dimensions therein. Results indicate that internet/social media exposure has no significant effects on the personal values of the individual. This means that there is no significant difference between individuals who are exposed to or consume internet/social media for Low, Moderate, or High periods of time. This study contradicts previous research that showed that traditional forms of media such as print media, radio, and television are effective in reinforcing the personal values of individuals. Therefore, it becomes essential that further research be conducted in this area of work.
