“Medicinal Plant Identification using Deep Learning: A Yolov8 Approach”

ABSTRACT The identification and classification of medicinal plants are vital for various applications, including traditional medicine, biodiversity conservation, and pharmaceutical research. In this study, we propose a novel approach for medicinal plant identification using deep learning, specifically employing the YOLOv8 (You Only Look Once version 8) object detection model. We collect a diverse dataset of images containing various medicinal plants, annotated with bounding boxes to facilitate model training. The YOLOv8 model is then trained on this dataset using a deep learning framework, fine-tuned to adapt to the intricacies of medicinal plant recognition. Through rigorous validation and testing procedures, we evaluate the model's performance, ensuring its accuracy and generalization ability. Finally, we deploy the trained model for real-world applications, providing a user-friendly platform for medicinal plant identification. Our approach showcases the efficacy of deep learning techniques, particularly YOLOv8, in automating and enhancing the process of medicinal plant identification, with potential implications for research, conservation, and healthcare
