NEP 2020: Transforming Teacher Training Programs in alignment with the NCTE Regulation 2025
Author Name : Dr. Niraj Kumar Singh
ABSTRACT This paper explores the transformative potential of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the Integrated Teacher Education Program (ITEP) in reshaping India's education system, particularly in the realm of teacher education. The NEP 2020 introduces comprehensive reforms aimed at enhancing the quality of education by focusing on learner-centred approaches, critical thinking, problem-solving, and interdisciplinary learning. At the heart of these reforms is the recognition of the central role teacher’s play in shaping the nation's future. The paper highlights the challenges in the current teacher education system, such as out-dated curricula, insufficient practical training, and the disconnect between theory and practice. It argues that the NEP's emphasis on integrating technology, improving infrastructure, and developing teacher motivation is crucial to overcoming these obstacles. The ITEP, as a key initiative under the NEP, aims to provide holistic teacher training through a dual-major Bachelor’s degree that combines subject expertise with pedagogical skills. Drawing on global best practices, such as those in Australia, Canada, and China, the paper demonstrates how ITEP and the NEP's reforms align with international standards for teacher education. Ultimately, the paper asserts that these initiatives have the potential to create a highly skilled, motivated, and reflective teaching workforce capable of preparing students for the complexities of the 21st century. The successful implementation of these reforms, despite challenges, promises to deliver a more inclusive, quality-driven, and future-ready education system for India. A draft on Teacher Education Programmes of nine courses is placed by NCTE Regulation 2025 dated 20th February 2025 and it has been approved by Govt. of India which will be enforced from upcoming session 2026.
