ABSTRACT
Drugs that target the colonic have achieved importance in the extremely desirable local treatment of colon-related diseases with minimum adverse effects. It has better patient compliance because of its minimum cost, self-administered nature, and pain-free nature. The treatment of colon disease becomes effective when the drug is directly targeted to the colon without bioactive API release and absorption in an acidic medium. In the colonic delivery system, there are many different strategic approaches available, such as primary approaches and novel approaches, but primary approaches have certain limitations and drawbacks, such as breakdown or absorption in the GIT and first-pass metabolism. Modified dosage forms have been developed due to certain limitations of conventional drug products. In this review, novel, recent approaches for colonic delivery and patents for colon since 2000 are covered.
