Organic Farming versus Traditional Farming in Himachal Pradesh

Author Name : Narain Singh, Dr Dipti Gupta

ABSTRACT In Himachal Pradesh, a mountainous Indian state, farming is evolving from traditional to organic practices as environmental and economic concerns grow. This research examines the agricultural transformation in a region where farming supports 60% of the population's livelihood. Through analysis of field data and studies, we compare conventional and organic farming approaches. While traditional chemical-based farming offers immediate yields, it threatens soil health and water quality. Organic methods promise sustainable agriculture but present challenges like certification costs, initial yield reductions, and technical knowledge gaps. Government initiatives, including the Himachal Pradesh Organic Farming Policy and Mission Organic Himachal Pradesh, support this transition. However, farmers face obstacles in market access and infrastructure development. Our findings suggest successful organic conversion requires balancing immediate farmer needs with long-term sustainability. Key recommendations include strengthening market infrastructure, streamlining certification, and providing transition-period financial support These insights guide policymakers and stakeholders in promoting sustainable farming practices in mountainous regions.
