Organizational Commitment as Related to Attributional Styles among Secondary School Teachers of Haryana
Author Name : Dr. Nidhi Chugh
Human resources are considered very important capital for every organization with the assumptions that if the human resources are properly utilised, it will result into increased sustainability, success, and promotion of organizational goals. An attribution style (often referred to as explanatory style) is considered a personality/cognitive variable which interprets the way in which individuals explain the causes of events in their lives (Peterson and Barrett, 1987). In other words, attribution style is the characteristic way people attribute causes to events, particularly success and failures. There are three dimensions of attribution style i.e. Locus (Internality v/s Externality), Stability (Stability v/s Unstability) and Globality (Globility v/s Specificity). The present study was planned to study intercorrelation between organizational commitment and attributional styles of Secondary School teachers. To realize the main objective of the study, 400 Secondary School teachers were randomly selected from the various schools of Haryana; and were tested with Organizational Commitment Questionnaire (Mayers and Allens, 1990) and Attributional Styles Questionnaire (Petersons et al, 1982). Findings of the present study hereby depict that in males data, stability has marked significant positive relationship with all the three dimensions of Organizational Commitment. In females data, Externality has correlated with Normative Commitment. Findings from females data also depict that organizational commitment tends to be high in female teachers having pessimistic attribution style. This finding pertaining to the relationship between organizational commitment and attribution styles can’t be critically evaluated owing to the paucity of literature in this regard.
