ABSTRACT Osmotic drug delivery system (ODDS) uses osmotic pressure by using osmotic agents to regulate the delivery of the drugs. It is understood that old drug delivery systems provide an immediate issue of the drug in which the release of the drug cannot be managed and the effective concentration at the target site cannot be sustained for a longer time. Controlled drug delivery systems offer spatial control over the issue of drugs. Osmotic pumps are the most hopeful systems for delivering controlled drugs. Osmotic pumps issue the drug at a rate independent of pH and dissolution medium hydrodynamics. Ancient development of osmotic systems includes the development of the Rose-Nelson pump, the Higuchi-Leeper pumps, Alzet and Osmet systems, osmotic main pump andpush-pull system. Among all, in the novel drug delivery system (NDDS), ODDS is currently popular in the market due to its certain advantages over other delivery systems. This review contains the components, osmotic agents with their osmotic pressure, osmotic agents for the active drugs, and osmotic drug delivery system advantages and disadvantages.
