Performance Optimisation and Study of a Venturi Type Air Restrictor
Author Name : Atharva Prasanna Bagewadi
ABSTRACT
A flow restrictor is a device that restricts the flow of a fluid. A flow restrictor is also called as Flow Limiter. This paper will focus on the design optimization and manufacturing of intake system of a FSAE single cylinder race car. According to the rules of FSAE, the is a restrictor introduced for the intake system. Because of the use of restrictor, choking occurs for the engine and it affect the performance and the power output of the engine. It is mainly done to limit the power capability of the engine. As a result, it is necessary to improve this condition. As to comply the rules defined by FSAE, a restrictor is introduced between throttle body and engine and all the airflow to engine must pass through this restrictor. Since the mass flow rate to the engine is now fixed due to the restrictor, it becomes necessary to overcome this limitation by increasing the delta pressure after the restrictor to a maximum value. In short, the pressure difference between the cylinder and the atmosphere must be to a minimum value to make the airflow maximum. The air intake manifold which is modelled, designed and optimized is based on KTM Duke 390 engine considering its throttle body and cylinder head specifications.
