Place of English Language in New Education Policy 2020
Author Name : Dr. Suporna Mitra
The NEP 2020 formulated by a committee of nine eminent academicians and scientists was headed by Dr. Kasturirangan. The New Education Policy 2020 supports the Three-Language Policy. The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 advocates that the medium of instruction should be home language or mother tongue or local language or regional language for schools, until at least Grade 5, but preferably till Grade 8 and beyond. All students will learn three languages in their school under the 'formula'. At least two of the three languages should be native to India. But the policy does not talk about shedding the English language instead it emphasizes on the importance of multilingualism which has great cognitive benefit for young children. The main advantage of choosing regional language or mother tongue is that it will reduce dropouts and ensure education to every child across different sections of the society.
