Planning of Fecal Sludge Management (Fsm) In Peri Urban Areas: A Case Study of Dehradun Town

Author Name : Jitendra Tyagi, Bhanu Priya

ABSTRACT

Conventional centralized approaches to wastewater management have generally failed to address the needs of communities living in the hilly areas for the collection and treatment of domestic wastewater. Decentralized waste water systems with Faecal sludges management (FSM) addresses this issue in planning a comprehensive waste water solution where a centralized sewerage system is not feasible. There are opportunities for implementing wastewater management systems based on a decentralized approach that may offer opportunities for wastewater re-use and resource recovery as well as improvements in local environmental health conditions. Decentralized approaches of wastewater management system integrated with FSM helps in achieving 100 % Containment of human waste in a town. The paper discusses the planning and operational sustainability of decentralized technologies for wastewater management system inclusive of FSM in peri-urban areas and their associated management requirements. The paper concludes that a concerted capacity-building effort is required to overcome the constraints that hinder the sustainability of decentralized wastewater systems with feacal sludge management.
